Kuyasa has recently launched the Green Sweep project as an empowerment initiative in Kayamandi, Western Cape, South Africa. The project skills and empowers unemployed men to manufacture durable environmentally friendly Green Sweep brooms. The Green Sweep broom consists of 1) bristles made from recycled two liter plastic bottles; 2) a wooden handle and base, and 3) a metal clamp holding the broom together. The manufacturing process is manual, using a customised non-electric tool for cutting the bristles from the recycled plastic bottles. A person can be skilled to manufacture a broom in one day. To develop and expand the project, Kuyasa requires partner involvement. Support can take the following forms: •Buying Green Sweep brooms from Kuyasa; •Investing in equipment or enterpreneurial training; •Transferring skills to the project’s beneficiaries through volunteering.
