Programme Leader: Katie Taylor assisted by Zintle Nomavuka
Programme Background
The Visual Arts Programme began in 2005 with basic and craft skills development. The programme continued to grow, utilizing professionals and practicing artist locally to instruct participants. In 2007 the program incorporated more media such as ceramics and beading. In 2008 the Film project was developed by Katie Taylor, a professional in the industry who came to teach and set things in place for the program to continue. We typically run two film project classes each year for student to tell their stories and use film to speak about who they are and the world they live in.
Mission: Equipping students with art knowledge and skill, in the process building portfolios, enabling them to continue they studies in any art medium.
Activities/Services: We have different class modules each year, so students are exposed to several mediums such as drawing, photography, graphic design and water colour.
Schedule:
Monday 3:00pm-6:00pm is studio time.
Wednesday 3:30pm-5:00pm Level One Art.
Friday 3:30pm- 4:30pm Jungle Room art class (younger kids age 8-13 years old)
How to access the program: Late January/early February we start a new Level One class and a new Jungle Room class. Both are free classes and all are welcome to join and explore art.
Future Goals: We look forward to further development in our ceramics media as well as print making, lithograph and further exploration of photography. We continue to create beneficial partnerships in photography, film, ceramics and other mediums, bringing in university and professional instructors whenever possible. We hope to bring in even more professionals and seek to partner with organizations that might help us to expand and grow. We also desire to offer business classes once students have reached an advanced level and we are currently launching a silk screening program.
