Sport Programmes

Minimize

Programme Leader: Siphe Ntshayi and Wilson Godwana (Gym and Weighlifting)

Programme Background

The sports Programme started in 2003 with only soccer but has since expanded to other sports such as basketball, netball, futsal, and gym and weightlifting. The teams consist of children and youths from Kayamandi. The gym and weightlifting Programme caters more for the adults and older youths.

Current Activities

Through many training sessions, the sports Programme has grown to have many teams in each sport.

  • Soccer: 3 teams (Under-11, Under-13, and Under-15)
  • Basketball: 2 teams (Junior Team and Senior Team)
  • Netball: 2 teams (both Senior Teams)
  • Futsal: 6 teams of 8-13 year-olds.
  • Gym and Weightlifting (mostly adults)

Other People Involved

  • Xolani Khwinana – Assistant Coach to Siphe

Youth Leaders Involved

There are several local youths who help out in basketball and netball.

Holistic Impact of Programme

Through sports, the young people can grow holistically (physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually). They also learn how to be disciplined in their training to improve their performance and sportsmanship. They truly develop to become leaders in their community through the life-skills they learn from sports. As for gym and weightlifting, it is a public place for the community to come and use, to achieve their health and fitness goals.

Future Plans/Visions for the Programme

The sports Programme hopes to experience physical growth in terms of establishing and training more teams in future. It also hopes to venture into many other types of sports. When the members in the sports Programme gain more experience and skills in their field, it is hoped that they will be able to represent their community and join competitions against other teams/ other gyms/ other weightlifters in the Western Cape area. This will reflect our efforts in reaching out to the community.
